">Professional nursing organizations support nursing by offering multiple tools the nurse can access. For example, the American Nurse Association (ANA) “supports nursing in multiple areas, including nursing excellence, health policy, work environment, innovation and evidence, advocacy, and workforce” (Helbig, 2018). Nursing organizations are a great place for collective information to be gathered and easily accessed by the nurse. Helbig tells us that organizations such as the ANA are also advocates for nurses in the legislative realm, “the ANA developed the standards of practice, which, combined with the individual state’s Nurse Practice Act (NPA), informs nurses about their scope of practice and the boundaries of a nursing license” (2018).
Professional nursing organizations are a great place for nurses to not only find educational opportunities but to also use as a starting point for legislative action for change to better the profession and improve patient outcomes. “Nursing associations in particular have a long history of mobilizing nurses to address policy issues and directly influencing policy choices by government for improved societal health and well-being” (MacDonald, et.al., 2012, p. 32). Nurses have a front row seat to patient care and by being active in nursing associations, they can have a voice in making policy change that is instrumental in improving patient care. The professional nurse association is “the voice of the nurse in the federal government and is active in all affairs relating to nursing” (Helbig, 2018). To make effective change, these organizations can have an impact on practice that an individual nurse simply cannot.
